Is Call of Duty going to be Xbox exclusive? – What happens after the Microsoft buyout

UPDATE January 21: Microsoft Gaming’s CEO Michael Spencer has stated on Twitter that Call of Duty will continue releasing on the PlayStation.

Looks like the worries of the community are unwarranted.

Original article from January 20:

The impending sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft for almost 70 billion US-Dollar has quickly caused an earthquake in the gaming industry. Popular games and series such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo or Overwatch could be come exclusive titles.

Is Call of Duty disappearing from PlayStation?

For many Call of Duty players Activision changing hands immediately raised questions regarding future Call of Duty and if the game will stay on all platforms. For now at least there is no need to worry about changes. In an interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming’s CEO said the following: “I’ll just say to players out there who are playing Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform: It’s not our intent to pull communities away from that platform and we remained committed to that,”

So at least for the near future we do not have to worry about Call of Duty going Xbox/PC-exclusive. However the PlayStation-exclusive bonuses that we have seen in recent years might get transfered over to Xbox instead.

Sony vs. Microsoft

Sony and Microsoft are still the two main competitors in the console market, but a sudden shift to Xbox exclusitivity would not be the best business decision. Call of Duty has built up quite a community on PlayStation and exclusing it for the future does not seem profitable.

A sentiment supported by the fact that Microsoft’s CEO also stressed the fact that gaming should be accessible to all in their press release. Things may change later down the road, but we will have to wait and see at least until the acquisition is completed in 2023.
