Huge Dota 2 update aims to help out new players and tackles smurfing

In a new blog post, Valve details all the changes and updates that will help newer and older players alike in Dota 2.

As DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, the animated series based on the game, launches on Netflix Dota is expected to see an influx of newer players. The newest update obviously caters to that demographic with some changes.

New players will be helped out by a new streamlined shop, which helps them out with build paths and what to buy throughout the match, while also providing new default guides for all heroes aimed at executing a solid game plan. New players will also find themselves with objectives to pursue and to get them familiar with some of the game’s mechanics. There’ll also be a new reward line available to reward them for their efforts.

A lot more resources have been made available to help newer players navigate the in-depth mechanics that are present in Dota 2 by implementing a glossary about basically everything. Valve also put in a New Player Mode, which allows players to learn at their own pace in a more flexible environment, allowing them to leave games (where they’ll be replaced by a bot) and limiting their Hero pool to easier options. The bots have also been made a bit more intelligent.

Smurfing tackled

To facilitate things for long-time players and returning players, Valve is also tackling smurfs. From now on smurfing will be a bannable offense, just like boosting or selling accounts. Accounts that are under suspicion will be forced to play against other suspected smurfs. Returning players who left the game for a while also won’t be thrown into the depths right away, as a new calibration system is put in place to gauge their skill and to give them time to adapt again.

Valve also announced the 7.29 Dota 2 update will be coming the Friday following the Singapore Major.
