Playing in general obviously also awards you experience points. But there are better methods than just fulfilling objectives or scoring a high amount of kills.
One method is to set your filter to Blitz only. This allows you to have more opponents in the rounds, which result in more kills. That in turn means more experience and faster levels.

You should also remove “Free for All” and “Search and Destroy” from your playlist. Most players in that mode score fewer kills.

Challenges
Challenges from Modern Warfare (2019) are back in the game and easier to find now. You can not only unlock rewards there, but also earn tons of experience. You can tackle multiple tasks at once to level up faster.

Operator Missions
Operator Missions are a new addition to Call of Duty. In Vanguard you can also level up your playable characters. These levels reward you with bonus skins and a good chunk of experience for completing them.
Each Operator has his own preferences so make sure to look at the missions in detail before jumping in to grind those levels.
