Hanwha Life eliminates Fnatic from Worlds 2021 – Can RNG redeem the LPL?

Group C concluded with RNG and Hanwha Life advancing to quarter-finals while Fnatic and PSG Talon fell short. The Group was filled with some of the most controversy, as Fnatic’s early roster struggles defined most of their Worlds 2021 run. After the sudden demise of FPX and near elimination of EDG, RNG almost continued the LPL’s disappointing Week 2 trend.

Fnatic falls at Worlds 2021

The departure of Elias “Upset” Lipp set the tone for Fnatic’s group stage run. Though Fnatic’s sub ADC exceeded expectations considering the circumstances, it did not prevent their 0-3 start. Fnatic’s miracle run started off strong, as the LEC second seed handed RNG its first loss.

Gaining momentum, Fnatic only had Hanwha Life before them to advance to tie-breakers. Though Fnatic were able to keep the game competitive largely through the efforts of Louis “Bean” Schmitz. As is the case in most of Hanwha’s games, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon took complete control over the game, ending with a 10/1/8 on LeBlanc.

With one game, Hanwha Life both punched their ticket to quarters and ended Fnatic’s disappointing Worlds run.

Are RNG the best remaining LPL squad?

The LPL were heralded as the clear favorite region moving into Worlds 2021. The first two gamedays of week two have shown that the LPL teams at Worlds are clearly fallible. RNG had the strongest first week out of any of the undefeated teams. Though struggling against Fnatic and Hanwha Life, RNG’s fall was not quite as drastic as FPX or EDG’s sudden downturn.

RNG still managed to win the tie-breaker against Hanwha to secure the first seed going into knockouts. RNG still tout one of the strongest bottom lanes with two strong solo laners. Going into knockouts, RNG still seem like a strong contender for the title.
