Fortnite’s “The Device” washes the old away – What happens now?

Once again Epic wows its fans with another event on a massive scale. “The Device” not only broke viewership records but also radically changed Fortnite.

On Monday “The Device”-event began and concluded Chapter 2’s season 2. To kick off season 3 of the Battle Royale the spy boss Midas brought forth a shining ball of energy by triggering what had been nicknamed the “Doomsday Device”. As the agency in the middle of the map exploded the shining orb shot into the sky and triggered electromagnetic waves. These first pushed back the storm but then the seas around the isle gathered and returned as a massive torrent of water in a new storm.

Once more Epic has changed the map through an event. With the storm now consisting of water players are able to swim and dive in it, but they still take damage as before.

Viewership records

According to Rod “Slasher” Breslau Fortnite’s most recent event had more than six million viewers across different platforms like YouTube and Twitch. With those numbers the Battle Royale one-upped itself as the previous record was held by the black hole event that heralded the arrival of Chapter 2.

Is the new storm a failed experimentt?

During the event a monitor was shown in a mysterious office, setting off speculations throughout the community. Did the employees there instigate the entire flood?

Fortnite character Jonesy was talking about “unforseen” results as he could be seen walking through the door. More than likely he was referring to the electromagnetic waves of the device that triggered the change. More fuel for the theories abound that someone was working on it behind the scenes.

Epic Games has also published new teasers on Twitter and in the game. One of them shows the moon, which plays an integral role in the changing of the tides. Some theories speculate that the small moon shown can influence the seas around the isle.

Another teaser with a prominent trident has also been the talk of town. Although the symbol is commonly associated with the ancient god Poseidon or Neptune some fans including Tyler “Ninja” Blevins suspect a crossover involving DC Comics’ Aquaman.

In each teaser fans could also see a number: 02030203.
Although there are more theories they might also just be a shorthand way to refer to Chapter 2 Season 3.

Did the “Glory Hole” serve as reference?

Some Californian fans might also find the new storm strangely familiar as it partly looks like it was inspired by the spillway in California’s Lake Berryessa, nicknamed “Glory Hole”.

Did the “Glory Hole”-spillway from California’s Lake Berryessa inspire the new storm in Fortnite?

Until the official release of Season 3 on Wednesday, June 17, the players will have to adjust to the changed environment.

There are still plenty of questions to be asked as “The Device” ended. But until the release of Season 3 we won’t know for sure. Join the discussion on Social Media or on our Discord!
