FFXIV Endwalker is Literally Suffering from Success – Square Enix Suspends Sales of the Game

The launch for Final Fantasy XIV’s expansion Endwalker has been a resounding success in terms of sales and player numbers. Day after day players flock to the world of Eorzea to an alarming degree. Login queues regularily go up into the thousands as the servers are straining under the load.

Suffering from success

With almost two weeks since early access launched and no end in sight for the congestion, developer Square Enix has now decided to enact drastic measures. To prevent the prevalent queues from straining the overworked servers even further, they have announced a temporary suspension of all sales and advertisements for Final Fantasy XIV.

As they have no fix in a timely matter available with the global semi-conductor shortage this is the last ooption available to them to combat the current congestion. Registration for the the free trial of FFXIV will also be suspended as they detailled it out in the official post on their website.

This process will be phased over a span of days and Square Enix apologized for the inconveniences caused. Current players will still be able to buy the expansion pack to start their journey in Endwalker, but new players will be locked out for a period of time. They did not state when they would resume sales.

Free Game Time as Compensation

The ongoing congestion since launch has already led to Square Enix awarding seven free days of game time in the first week as an apology. Now they have decided to give out additional 14 days due to the still unresolved issues. But the 21 days of free game time are not the only measure.

Since launch the pesky Error 2002 has been the bane of many players as it randomly disconnects players in queue, potentially sending them back to the end of it. Square Enix has now identifed the issue and produced a fix that will go live with the next patch 6.01 on December 21.

This marks the second occassion in recent times that Final Fantasy XIV had to temporarily suspend sales. During July 2021 a surge in players in the wake of World of Warcraft’s decline already forced them to do so once.

As Final Fantasy XIV continues to soar higher it even reached “universal acclaim” on metacritic and stands poised to become a classic.
