CDL: FaZe dominate while OpTic, Empire and LA Thieves contest for the top

With the Major looming, these were some of the best teams from CDL’s super week.

As the Call of Duty League super week concluded we have seen the league’s top half solidify their leads, clean up their play, and cement themselves as the favorites going into the Major starting on March 1st. Atlanta FaZe stands undefeated with a three-way tie between OpTic Chicago, Dallas Empire, and the Los Angeles Thieves below them, all at 3 – 1. Teams like the New York Subliners and Minnesota Rokkr are still on the periphery with the potential of breaking into this upper echelon. Here were some of the best individual performers and teams from the super week who we can expect to continue going into the upcoming Major.

Atlanta FaZe claims the first seed

Atlanta had a clean three wins across the week, triumphing over Toronto Ultra, Florida Mutineers, and the Paris Legion. After this week, Atlanta FaZe holds the highest overall SND win rates (85.71%) and round win rates (65%) as they were 4 – 0 in the game mode.

Abezy specifically has been FaZe’s MVP on SND as he has averaged the 2nd highest K/D at 1.41 and makes up a majority of his team’s kill share at 29.74%. This is largely what sets Atlanta FaZe apart from the rest of the league, as Minnesota Rokkr is close behind with an 83% win rate on SND.

FaZe’s closest game came by way of Paris Legion in their final game of the super week. In a back-and-forth series, Paris legion edged out a one-point win over FaZe on Hardpoint in Checkmate. Paris Legion’s player, Classic, had a standout performance as he dropped 30 kills and had an astonishing 2:10 total hill time in their first win. FaZe’s Simp was largely responsible for stopping the series from ending in game four and swinging in Legion’s favor as he top dragged in the game with 32 kills and an impressive 9 kill streak. Ultimately, Legion bent FaZe but failed to break them, allowing Atlanta FaZe to go into the Major standing tall as the team to beat.

LA Thieves fall at the final hurdle against Dallas Empire

While L.A. Thieves struggled in their first game against Seattle Surge, they still managed to pull together a respectable 2 -0 start to their super week. L.A. Thieves excellent play in these games, especially against the London Ravens, was facilitated mostly through TJHaly and Temp’s impeccable play which carried through most of their games.

Ultimately, L.A. Thieves could not cap off a perfect week as they were swept by the reigning CDL champions, Dallas Empire. The first two games were kept competitive as L.A. Thieves lost on both Raid and Checkmate by slight margins. In their final game of the series, playing Control on Raid, Dallas Empire showed why they are still a threat to make another run for the crown.

Huke and Dashy have both been incredible Control players as both fall into the top five on the mode. Huke specifically holds a 1.23 K/D and has the 2nd highest damage per death (245) on Control, showing his dominance as he finished in the series-winning game with a total of 38 frags. The L.A. Thieves have shown glimpses of brilliance but their series against Dalla Empire but still need to improve if they hope to overtake any of the top teams.

Chicago OpTic rebounds

Losing one of the most important matches of the season in a potential playoff preview against Atlanta FaZe, Chicago OpTic recovered incredibly well this week with a 3 – 0 run. Only dropping 3 games the entire super week and finishing 3 -1 every series, OpTic showed they still have room to improve but is overall trending in the right direction.

Perhaps most importantly, Chicago OpTic has improved their SND win rate bumping it up to 50%. The squad won all three SND maps they played though were still played on a knife’s edge as they only won against the Florida Mutineers by a single round.

Adversely, Chicago OpTic holds some of the best stats on Hardpoint and Control after this week. Chicago OpTic holds the highest aggregated K/D on Hardpoint at 1.08 and the highest average points per game with 245. Control is OpTic’s forte however as they have maintained their 100% win rate on the game mode and have the best individual round win rate (65.22%). OpTic is far from the flashiest team in the CDL but the team has shown near-perfect cohesion that is certainly promising heading into the Major.
