Epic Games acquires Fall Guys developer Mediatonic

Fall Guys’ company Tonic Games Group merging with Epic Games could revitalize the game

After Fall Guys released on August 4th, 2020, it quickly amassed a massive audience and player base. On Twitch, Fall guys skyrocketed to the most viewed category on the streaming platform and by the third quarter of 2020 accumulated 4.74 billion hours watched. Alongside this, Fall Guys peaked at a player base of 1.5 million. Since then, the number of active and returning players has drastically dropped off, consequently making changes more difficult and slower to roll out.

Video game reporter for Bloomberg News, Jason Schreier, broke the news of Fall Guys’ merger with Epic Games. This new partnership is not slated to make any immediate changes to the game’s current availability or team. Fall Guys will still be featured and available on Steam for the time being with usual operations will still be conducted by Mediatonic.

Epic Games are primarily intervening to implement new features, such as cross-play, to boost the active player base to its former numbers. Additionally, Epic Games will be making necessary improvements to the PC and PS4 versions of the game. While the initial release of Fall Guys on Xbox and mobile were delayed by Tonic Games Group, the inclusion of Epic Games now opens the opportunity for this launch to happen much sooner.

Fall Guys is also rumored to make the switch to free-to-play, similar to Rocket League after Epic Games acquired Pysnoix. Fall Guys is likely to see some of its greatest changes since its initial launch in the next two months.
