Esports Legends: Rekkles

A Swedish powerhouse and one of Europe’s greatest players to ever touch the game. This is the story of Rekkles, Europe’s strongest marksman.

A recent controversial transfer saw Rekkles leaving Fnatic and joining their biggest competitor. Having joined the ranks of G2 Esports, Europe saw the creation of yet another new superteam. The last time Rekkles made such a move, it ended in disaster. He left Fnatic for Alliance back in November 2014, but eventually failed to qualify for playoffs after losing to Fnatic themselves. With the recent success and domination of G2 Esports, he will once again take his shot at greatness.

Rekkles – A Prodigy

Starting his career at an incredibly young age, Rekkles was dubbed a rising star in the scene. The young and talented Swedish player quickly rose in the solo queue ladder and  joined Playing Ducks in 2012. By then, he was only 15 years old. Having played against some of Europe’s strongest teams at tournaments like the In2LOL Kickoff EU tournament, he did not go unnoticed. Even though he did not go far in that tournament, Fnatic had their eyes set on the young and promising player, noticing his potential.

Rekkles was recruited by the Fnatic organisation later that year following his appearance at the In2LOL Kickoff. With the new upcoming Riot-sponsored EU LCS league, it was clear that there were real opportunities for professional players. Unfortunately, due to the rules of the EU LCS, Rekkles was too young to compete. Fnatic was so invested in him, however, that they did not just stood idly by.

Riding the bench

Fnatic really wanted to invest in Rekkles and built a second team around him that could compete outside of the EU LCS. It was called “Fnatic.Beta”. This team would only last a couple of months and was a real bummer for Rekkles. Luckily, he found a team in need of a marksman to compete. Fnatic lend the young player to the roster that was later picked up by Copenhagen Wolves. Because Rekkles would only be able to join the main line-up of Fnatic later that year, he could still compete on a high level this way. In November 2013, Rekkles became the starting marksman for the Fnatic line-up.

Having spent much time working on his skill outside of the EU LCS, he could finally start competing in Europe’s biggest league. Things started out well, with Fnatic ending in second place in their first split together. The second split of 2014 proved to be a hard one. Although Rekkles kept on impressing everybody with his sublime play on the champions like Vayne and Lucian, Fnatic were still fighting for their chance to represent Europe at Worlds 2014. Eventually they beat ROCCAT in a close semi-final to book their ticket to the event. Alas, they did not make it out of the group stage.

By now, Rekkles had shown Europe what we can expect from a top tier marksman. Even though he did not have the trophies or first places to solidify his position, he had the respect of every European player. He had a small fall-out when he joined the Alliance squad, but this only showed his hunger for victory. After picking himself up again, he re-joined Fnatic and created one of Europe’s first dynasties.

Rekkles’ Loyalty & The Fnatic Dynasty

After his short time away from Fnatic, he quickly came back to give Europe their first big dynasty. Under the Fnatic banner, Rekkles would go on to not only dominate Europe by winning multiple EU LCS titles, but he would also put Europe on the map internationally. With his always humble attitude and respect towards the craft of professional play, he gained a lot of respect from players around the world.

Rekkles became the face of Fnatic and represented Europe in their first Worlds final since season one. Even now we can still feel all the emotions Rekkles brought us on the (inter)national stage. He gave all European fans a player to root for. In the end, he always came up short of winning the biggest title there is in League of Legends: Worlds.

The year 2020 showed us that anything could happen. Going five games against the tournament favourites at Worlds 2020, we saw that Rekkles was still not done trying to get that championship title. Deep down he knew that some things needed to change. What he did next shocked the whole European landscape. He left Fnatic after five years of nothing but pure loyalty and joined their biggest competitor G2 Esports. With this new superteam, he hopes to achieve the one thing he always wanted: winning Worlds. Nothing short of that will be enough for Rekkles, but he is more motivated than ever.

Onwards to 2021

Rekkles is one of Europe’s longest standing professional players that is still regarded as one of the best at their role. He gained a lot of respect over the years and can truly be called a legend. He is not done yet and 2021 will prove us that he still has everything in his power to compete at the highest level. Follow his new journey starting the 22nd of January at 18:00 CET when he plays against the MAD Lions in the opening match of the LEC.
