EDward Gaming upsets Damwon Kia in the Worlds 2021 Finals

Entering the Worlds 2021 Grand Finals, Damwon Kia were undoubtedly the favorites to take the series. Many analysts and fans predicted a 3-0 sweep for the LCK powerhouse, seemingly guaranteed to lift their second consecutive Summoner’s Cup and cement their legacy as the only other team to win multiple World Finals.

EDward Gaming massively upset fan expectations, battling throughout a harsh five game series to ultimately prevail. EDG achieved an unprecedented feat, completing the knockout stages in an astonishing fifteen matches. The LPL’s most decorated organization finally added their only missing trophy, the Summoner’s Cup.

How EDward Gaming defied the odds

Though most of the games were played on a knife’s edge, EDG opened up the series with a convincing win. Jiejie’s neutral objective control on Jarvan IV gave EDG a lead throughout the entire series, until one explosive teamfight put the first game in EDG’s favor.

The next two games were Damwon’s to win. Showmaker and Canyon showed why, even after this loss, they are still largely considered the best mid/jungle in the world. On Malazhar and his signature Sylas, Showmaker heralded a combined 10/2/14 which secured Damwon a single game lead.

The opposing midlane, Scout, had one of the single best Worlds performances across the final two games. Picking Zoe in both of the final games, Scout ended with a combined 6/2/12 record. These few, yet incredibly important picks were integral in securing EDG the win and himself the Worlds MVP.

EDG have now completed the grand slam, as their extensive trophy case includes both Spring and Summer LPL Championships, the MSI trophy, and now the Summoner’s Cup. One of the most decorated organizations in League of Legends history, the team’s achievements are rivaled by few.
