EDG win the LPL grudge match in Worlds 2021 Quarter-Finals

Edward Gaming and Royal Never Give Up are the two historically most successful teams in the LPL. Both teams have won countless domestic titles and have lifted the MSI trophy. The only vacancy in both team’s trophy cases is the Summoners Cup, but only one could continue the journey at Worlds 2021.

EDG takes out their domestic rivals

In a five game thriller EDG barely knocked out their perennial rivals. Though RNG took an early advantage, the series quickly turned into a back-and-forth affair. In game three, Zhao “JieJie” Li-Jie brought EDG to series point off the back of two heroic baron steals. EDG were able to snowball the game and approach the final game.

With their back against the wall, RNG made one last effort in game four. Yuan “Cryin” Cheng-Wei pulled out an unorthodox Annie pick that helped immensely in this last ditch effort. Cryin’s champion pool proved to be a double-edged sword, as after he was banned out in game five, the midlaner seemed far less effective.

The efforts of EDG’s bottom lane, particularly Park “Viper” Do-hyeon, saw EDG gain an early lead that exploded into a massively winning game. In this final game of the series, EDG took a clear lead and dominated their domestic opponent.

The Quarter-Finals curse is finally broken

EDG have made Worlds a total of five times. In four out of those qualifications, EDG dropped out in the quarter-finals regardless of how well they played in Groups. This iteration of the roster finally broke the curse for the organization, and the team will see its first Semi-Finals match in its history.

Now EDG await the winner of the Cloud9 versus Gen.G game. One of these three teams will fill out the Grand Finals spot, and after EDG’s performance today it seems likely it could be them.
