DreamHack Open January Europe – These are the participants

With the closed qualifiers now over and done with, we now know all the participants for the DreamHack Open January Europe. The tournament starts on January 27 and features a $70.000 prize pool.

The tournament features a list of eight participants in total, with five of them being direct invites. These teams are BIG, Evil Geniuses, FunPlus Phoenix, Gambit Esports and Team Spirit. Evil Geniuses just came from a mediocre performance at the BLAST Premier Global Finals, while BIG is looking like the favorite to win it all. FunPlus Phoenix will be fielding a brand new roster which they’ll likely announce soon. Gambit Esports and Team Spirit have been on the rise as of late and will want to confirm they can compete with top tier talent.

They are joined by the winners of the closed qualifiers, which were Russian team forZe and Ukrainian team HellRaisers. The former played through the qualifiers with two stand-in players, but looked very convincing and didn’t drop a single map. HellRaisers beat out Styldunow in the first round but lost to forZe as they were sent to the lower bracket. There they recovered against Styldunow once again and qualified.

Rounding out the list of participants is German team Sprout. They received an invite following their win at the ESL Meisterschaft Autumn 2020, beating out BIG. DreamHack Open January Europe will start on January 27, but groups and match dates and hours are yet to be announced.
