Discord CEO backs down on plans to integrate NFT’s into the app after huge backlash

Earlier this week, Discord CEO Jason Citron hinted towards a possible integration of NFT’s into his world famous application. But, most of the feedback he received was pretty negative and the community did not seem to have any faith in this plan. Therefor, Citro backs down and states there are ‘no current plans to ship this internal concept’.

The online fuss got kickstarted by a tweet from Citron this Monday. Discord’s CEO responded to an article posted by Packy McCormick, which was about the app. Citron share a screenshot which hinted towards a possible integration of NFT’s in Discord, showing icons of the crypto wallets MetaMask and WalletConnect. It’s safe to say this little tease did not get the responses he would have wished.

Huge backlash

People were hesitant and had a lot of questions, mostly about security and the fact that Discord would encourage some form of pyramid schemes. Users even announced they would cancel their Nitro subscribtion, or at least threaten to do so, thanks to this news. You didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to recognize the community was not happy with the idea.

Of course, Citron also noticed the huge backlash and decided to back down, for now. In a response to his initial tweet he states Discord ‘has no current plans to ship this internal concept.’ He also added they are ‘focused on protecting users from spam, scams and fraud.’ So for now, Discord has listened to their community.
