CS:GO developer opens up on how Valve communicates with the community

Gautam Babbar, a CS:GO developer of nine years, explained why Valve interaction with the community is so sparse.

Valve has never been very communicative when it comes to acknowledging problems with the game, but this line of thought became a big concern as CS:GO faced several major problems. The developers stayed, as they have for many years, silent.

Babbar made a video titled “Let Updates Do The Talking” where he explains the line of thought of Valve. In the 10 minute video, he goes into detail about how the CS:GO team uses content and game changes to communicate with the audience.

The video has been met with a lot of backlash from the community. At the time of writing, the ratio of upvotes versus downvotes was 604/923.

“We think CS:GO is better when we get clear, unfiltered customer feedback. We read and analyze what our customers post on various online communities. But as they know, we rarely participate in those conversations.

When we participate, they stop talking to each other and they start talking to us, and the feedback becomes less clear. Occasionally, we weigh in if they seem blocked or we need some more information. But otherwise, we just stay out of it,” Babbar begins.

Valve seems to be scared to overpromise and underdeliver if they start communicating with their customers.

One of the latest bigger issues the game had was the Trust Factor issues. Valve clearly saw the community bring up this problem for weeks, but they chose to remain silent. Instead, they only communicated through a Twitter post once they had deployed the fix to the problem, essentially leaving their community in the dark for weeks on end.
