While there seems to be little mystery in Groups A & B, Group C proved only more contentious on day 3.
Thus far in MSI 2021, Damwon Kia faced their most difficult opponent in DetonatioN FocusMe. The reigning world champs so far had only faced marginal challenges however the LJL representatives gave DK their largest mid/late game deficit yet. Though ultimately winning in a spectacular comeback, DFM proved that they are not to be underestimated. DFM’s top laner, Evi, was largely responsible for their early lead. Accruing countless solo over Khan, DFM maintained their lead by holding near full control over neutral objectives.
Though with a massive advantage, DFM’s nerves began to show in the late game. On the precipice of DK’s nexus, DFM often overstayed. In their final fight, DFM’s primary engages were saw massive chunked out and dove into DK one at a time. This gave Damwon Kia a rather easy fight to end this contentious game, as their superior team fighting and scaling ultimately got them their third straight win.
Group B grew far more complicated as Cloud9 finally found their first win of MSI 2021. Infinity made the early game appear grim for C9 however, as two initial ganks onto their opponent’s usually self sustaining botlane put the NA team behind. Cloud9 did not take these losing trades without retaliation though, as their range and zoning advantage took them to Soul Point 20 minutes in the game. Cloud9’s ability to push Infinity turned an initially even trade into a game winning 3-for-1 skirmish that also earned them Soul Point.
Cloud9 played the remainder of the game safely, ensuring they would pick up their first game. Eventually taking Infinity’s nexus, this win was a solid team effort by Cloud9 that is a welcome turn for NA fans.
