Changes coming to League of Legends ranked decay and social systems

More details have been released by Riot Games regarding changes to the client and ranked systems.

For a few weeks now, Riot Games has hinted at big changes coming to the client and social systems. A developer update however has given us further insight into how these changes will impact competitive play. Among the long list of topics covered in the update are behavioral consequences, matchmaking, ranked, and competitive rewards.

Chief among the changes are adjustments to the rank decay system. Normally, rank decay prevents players from achieving a certain rank and ‘sitting on it.’ This forces players to actively play to keep their rank. Recent criticisms though have claimed that decay rates are faster than necessary and give almost no room for breaks. Riot Games have stated that they are “looking into better options for decay rates.”

Alongside this, Riot Games have acknowledged that ‘ranked leagues’ feel rather disconnected. In the developer update, Riot Games stated that they are looking into a ‘social leader board.’  Riot states that this may incite “competition between friends and acquaintances heat up during the climb.”

Also announced were potential changes the ‘behavioral’ system. Toxic players have long been a complaint in League of Legends. Riot Games have stated in their update that they are attempting to reduce the frequency of disruptive behavior generally. Developers also stated that they have received positive results from their intentional feeding methodology system and working on verbal abuse detection systems.
