Can Battlefield 2042 compete with Call of Duty without a Battle Royale?

Battlefield 2042 is doing many things correctly. The trailers are great and packed with Easter Eggs and Community Plays. Fans are also welcoming the news that the singleplayer campaign was removed in favor of focusing on the multiplayer.

But the newest entry into the Battlefield franchise can only offer that on release. Will that be enough to compete against Call of Duty with its massively popular Warzone Battle Royale? It not only brought back many old fans to Call of Duty but also managed to gain plenty of new players.

Battle Royale as trend

Ever since PUBG appeared on the stage four years ago, Battle Royales have become a large trend. Fortnite, Warzone even unorthodox concepts like Fall Guys have enjoyed considerable success.

After EA Dice’s CEO Oskar Gabrielson announced that there are no current plans for a Battle Royale in Battlefield 2042 one has to ask if that was the correct choice. Other studios profited immensely from the trend and even rival Call of Duty has been stronger than ever before due to it.

Building on your own strengths

Although the trend is there a Battle Royale mode is not an automatic recipe for success. Back in 2019 DICE did foray into the genre with humbling results. Ever since its release Battlefield V was plagued by problems and not enough content.

The mediocre campaign and the Battle Royale did little to improve the mood of the players. Fans were criticizing DICE for having forgotten the key parts of what made Battlefield great.

After that experience DICE is now planning on building on their own strengths instead of chasing trends: Epic multiplayer battles with up to 64 players on each team. Unnecessary features like the campaign were removed to make space for developing a strong multiplayer.

The decision to not implement a Battle Royale was also a reaction to the negative feedback the developers got for their previous attempt. It is most likely for the better that DICE has decided to build a solid foundation before experimenting with different game modes.

If the multiplayer is great Battlefield might not need a Battle Royale and nothing stops them from adding one in later once everything is settled.
