Bugha, Benjyfishy and Aqua: Why these top players consistently conquer the top spots

Diligence, natural talent, strategy or familial support: What is the key to becoming one of the best Fortnite players in the world? Three of Fortnite’s best share their reasons for success.

Some pro players are one-hit-wonders, others consistently achieve placements in the top ten of any tournament they enter. Every Fortnite pro has a different approach when it comes to their career. Let’s take a look at three of the most successful players and what could be the key to their outstanding performances.

Bugha: Fans help with motivation

Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf is probably the most famous among all Fortnite players. In July 2019, the 16-year-old catapulted himself towards international fame by winning the World Cup Solo Finals with his aggressive playstyle. Earning the title youngest multimillionaire in esports history to date. An appearance at “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” followed and the player from North America even got featured in a Super Bowl commercial.

With increasing fame and a growing follower base, Bugha has managed to turn his hobby into his job. As he explained in an interview with ESPN the limelight and his fans give him the motivation to perform at his best. Even when casually streaming, having spectators fuels him to put all his effort into his practice.

Bugha accepted and welcomed his role as a public figure. He aims to spread the concept of esports and strives to let everyone know who he is, he further explained to espn.

For Bugha, the exposure to the public and support from fans is what drives him to always give his best.

His devoted practice shows in his insane mechanical skill: Bugha counts as one of the best and most creative builders. Every day he spends hours in Creative Mode to practice and improve. With his incredibly high skill in mechanics, he can outplay anyone in boxfights since he does not have to focus on his building.

A special feature of his playstyle is his low mouse sensitivity. Bugha makes his motions in-game through bigger and more active movements with his hands. His low sense also adds to his insane aim. He can easily pinpoint and make amazing snipes.

Benjyfishy: No more school duties, Fortnite only

British progamer Benjy “Benjyfishy” David Fish is widely regarded as one of the best pro players in the entire scene. He achieves especially high results with his duo partner Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson, consistently making it into the top 10 at the recent Contender Duo Cash Cups.

In May 2019, Benjyfishy even caught the attention of mainstream news outlets: Despite being only 15 years old at that time, his mother Anne Fish decided to take him off school so he could solely focus on his Fortnite career. He now gets homeschooled and has private teachers educating him, but his mother cleared the path to becoming a pro player as well.

Since then Benjyfishy has taken his career to the next level. He has over 720,000 followers on Twitch and 630,000 subscribers on YouTube not only securing himself a monthly income via Fortnite, but also extending his reach even further.

With his mother as manager and the backup from his team NRG Esports in addition to financial independence and freedom from compulsory education, Benjy can devote his entire time to the battle royale.

Benjyfishy’s playstyle relies on his incredibly high map awareness, smart mobility and incredibly precise predictions. He knows when to play safe and when to play aggressive. Benjy thinks ahead and doesn’t always opt for the first kill he sees, but goes for a bigger plan.

Aqua: Calmness is the key

David “aqua” Wang is an exception to the usual “superstar-influencer” Fortnite pros. The Austrian does not appear in Super Bowl commercials like Bugha nor does he play for a worldwide multigaming organisation. And yet, he regularly achieves some of the highest results in tournaments.

Together with his former duo partner Emil “nyhrox” Bergquist Pedersen, he managed to win the trophy at the Fortnite World Cup 2019 Duo Finals. The 17 years old pro who plays under the flag of the British organisation Cooler can consistently be found at the top of the European leaderboards, as well as placing high in any European tournament.

His down-to-earth mentality might be the key to his great performance. Aqua is a rather calm but diligent player who makes sure to practice several hours per day. As he revealed in an interview with heute.at, he completely focuses on the game and blocks out any distractions from outside. Even when playing at the World Cup, he remained calm and ignored the noisy arena so he could display his best performance.

Aqua is quite strong when it comes to solo matches, but his main strength shows in Duo events, as he has ultimately proven by winning the World Cup Duos. With his new duo partner Klaus “Stompy” Konstanzer, he has become even better and keeps on delivering  more consistent high placings.

The duo’s main strength lies in their strategy and perfect timings when it comes to attacks. Depending on what playstyle is required, Aqua can change his strategy and adjust to the situation.
