Age of Empires IV – Everything you need to know about GENESIS, the first major AoE4 Tournament

Age of Empires IV will see its first major tournament come to a conclusion on November 14. After a grueling 512 player qualifier eight players remain to determine the very first champion of a major Age of Empires IV tournament.

How to watch

The matches will be broadcast on Elite Gaming Channel’s Twitch. Quarterfinals will start at 16:00 CET on Saturday. Sunday will kick off with the Semifinals at 16:00 CET as well.

Some players have been streaming their runs in the qualifiers as well, so make sure to keep an eye on those too, in case you want to look over their shoulders during the tournament:

Format

GENESIS’ main event will follow a simple single elimination bracket. The Quarter- and Semifinals will be Best of 5s, while the Grand Final will be a Best of 7.

Map Selection:

Every match will start on Lipany. The loser of the previous map will decide the next map from the following map pool:

  • Altai
  • Boulder Bay
  • Danube River
  • Dry Arabia
  • Hill and Dale
  • High View
  • King of the Hill
  • Lipany
  • Mongolian Heights
  • Mountain Pass

Civilization Selection:

Players can freely pick their civilization for the first map. Winners are unable to repeat their civilization pick for the following map. Losers can use the same civilization again.

Prizes

In total GENESIS had $20,000 up for grabs. $4,000 were awarded to the players who fell just short of qualification. The remaining $16,000 will be distributed as follows:

  • 1st: $7,000
  • 2nd: $3,000
  • 3rd/4th: $1,500
  • 5th-8th: $750
