Activision denies 100 Thieves’ Warzone charity tournament over sponsor

100 Thieves’ charity event ‘Gamers for Equality’ has been postponed to a later date. The news broke a day before the tournament was to start as Activision denied 100 Thieves’ request to use their game Call of Duty: Warzone for their tournament.

100 Thieves planned on working together with their sponsors CashApp and JBL Audio to host a 4-week Warzone tournament to support organizations that focus on racial equality. Yesterday 100 Thieves came out with the announcement that Activision denied their request to host the tournament.

Esports journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau heard from his sources that 100 Thieves was in fact allowed to host a tournament using Call of Duty: Warzone but their sponsor CashApp wasn’t allowed to be attached, which 100 Thieves refused. Apparently 100 Thieves was already told of the no-sponsor policy, but they still went ahead with the announcement.

100 Thieves CEO Matt “Nadeshot” Haag took to Twitter in a video to explain the situation. Activision didn’t want CashApp to sponsor the tournament but as CashApp was putting up the money that wasn’t an option for 100 Thieves, leading to the tournament being postponed. Nadeshot apologized for the inconvenience the situation has caused and showed respect for the position of Activision. He also promised to find another publisher and another game to complete the tournament.
