A Starter Guide to Viego, the Ruined King

Viego, the Ruined King has been released for League of Legends with Patch 11. Here is a quick starter guide for the new champion.

The newest addition to LoL’s champion roster will be unlocked on Friday the latest and cost 7800 Blue Essences at the start. After the first week the price will go down to 6300 units of the in-game currency.
Here is our guide to utilizing the Ruined King on the Rift after he has been part of the League of Legends lore for the longest time.

Territorial Jungler

Viego has been designated as a jungler by Riot back in September. While the players will indoubtedly experiment a fair bit for now his home is in the jungle.
His E ability is very useful in there as he can create zones around walls in which he becomes invisible and increases his attack speed, making him a strong brawler in the jungle. With the passive component from his Q Viego can sustain himself and his W and Ultimate can surprise opponents during ganks.

But the standout piece of Viego’s kit is his passive ability. It allows him to control an opposing champion that he killed or in whose death he was involved in shortly before. This opens up many different possibilities. For example Viego could gank the botlane and take out the support in order to then use the new abilities to also take out the AD carry. In large scale teamfights this ability can also be gamechanging.

While his strengths are undeniable, Viego also has some weaknesses: He is slow in actually clearing the jungle and to utilize his full potential you have to fight near walls. His abilitiy to take over an opposing champion can also quickly lead into overextensions and has to be used with care.

The king needs his blade

It should not be surprising that the Blade of the Ruined King is a strong first item on Viego. The additional on-hit damage and sustain enables him to jungle a lot easier. For mythic items there are several ways to build Viego. Trinity Force utilizes his attack speed, Divine Sunderer is also an option as Viego also benefits from Ability Power. If you are looking for more exotic pickups, Stridebreaker and Immortal Shieldbow can also work on him.

After your choice you should focus on a balance between attack damage and defensive capabilities in the form of Death’s Dance, Guardian Angel or Sterak’s Gage. Or you decide to go aggressive and buy items with crit like Essence Reaver or Guinsoo’s Rageblade which synergize well with Viego’s Q.

In terms of runes players should pick up Conqueror as Keystone Rune. More damage and self healing fit Viego well and enables him to dive into opponents in teamfights.

How strong the Ruined King really is on live servers remains to be seen but Nick “LS” De Cesare expects a rather slow start for him.
