A quick look ahead to the Dota 2 Singapore Major Main Event

Despite being plagued by COVID-19, the upcoming Dota 2 Singapore Major still has a lot of international and competitive Dota 2 to offer.

Dota 2’s first international lan event of 2021 is getting closer and closer. Now that we know who the teams are that will be attending the event, the question remains how they will perform at this event. How will the regional isolation have affected the skill gap between the different regions? And what teams will surprise us during the Singapore Major

Stand-in City

First however, we need to talk about the elephant in the room. The fact that we can even have an international offline event during the covid-19 crisis is amazing of course. Nonetheless there have been some complications. Biggest one being that many players are still not able to attend the event due to Covid-19 infections.

Already there have been multiple teams that announced they are not able to field their full roster, and will be playing with a stand-in instead. Something that will surely affect their performance. If you need to perform on the highest level, it’s only natural that you want to do this with the five players you have practiced with. Teams such as Virtus Pro, Neon and Quincy Crew will all be using stand-ins, while Natus Vincere and beastcoast pulled out of the Major completely.

Winning it all

On the other side of the coin we have the teams that are expected to walk away from the major with a top placement. Team Secret for example has been dominating the european region for more than a year now. Dominating a region that houses teams like OG, Alliance, Team Liquid and Team Nigma, which are all teams that possess a ridiculous level of skill themselves. So if you can dominate the european region, how hard can it be to dominate the international competition as a whole?

The Challengers

Team Secret can’t get complacent though. A diverse collection of teams is ready to take their place at the top. Evil Geniuses has historically been one of Team Secrets greatest challenges, as they are once again in Singapore. Matches between EG and Secret are often branded as the modern “El Clasico” with both teams always giving it their all when facing each other in battle.

The Dark Horse

Another Dota 2 tradition is that of the dark horse. The team that nobody expects, but shows up suddenly to trash their competition. For this major there are many teams with the potential to be a dark horse. So keep your eyes peeled for teams like Quincy Crew, Team Aster and Team Liquid. Teams that you might not be too familiar with, and don’t expect too much from. As they might be a surprising contender during this major, causing upset after upset. Maybe even getting themselves to the finals.

The Singapore Major will get started on March 29 with a first matchup between Alliance and Team Aster. You can watch the matches here.
