5 Things we learned from the new Hogwarts Legacy gameplay trailer

1. The combat looks interesting

Coming up with a system to make magic duels interesting and deep isn’t easy, but it does look like Hogwarts Legacy has found a nice middle ground. There’s multiple spells you can chain together and it seems players can play around with different styles. Furthermore you’ve got the ability to use external items, such as plants you’ve gotten from your knowledge of Herbology, into battle. While the trailer does show the NPCs to be a little static, let’s hope that gets resolved upon release of the game.

2. You start out as a fifth year student

You won’t start out at Hogwarts in your first year, but you’re joining late. This means you’ll have to try your best to learn as much as possible to catch up to your fellow students. While it might be disappointing to some, it’s a logical step to take from the developers point of view and you’ll still get to experience things like being sorted in your house and exploring Hogwarts, which we’re very thankful for.

3. Things might take a dark turn

At one point in the gameplay trailer, we see our own player character perform the Avada Kedavra curse, which is one of the unforgivable curses. This might indicate that either the story will take a darker turn or you’ll have the option to take yourself down a darker path. It would surely open up a lot more possibilities and it will be interesting to see how it impacts the wizards and world around you.

4. The story looks interesting (and is rooted in lore)

From what we’ve gathered the story will focus on a Goblin rebellion which is led by Ranrok who has allied himself with dark wizards. It surely opens up an interesting route to progress the story. Goblins use a seperate form of magic, which we get a glimpse of in the trailer, and there’s a deep history surrounding the use of wands and how wizards relate themselves to Goblins. It’d be great if the story delved a little deeper into that relationship, which seems to be the direction it’s taking.

5. There’s a lot to do and discover

In any case it’s hard to not get excited about the game from what we’ve been shown. There’s a lot to do and discover. There’s a whole slew of magical beasts you can find and take care of, you can attend classes, there’s ways to upgrade your equipment and abilities and turn yourself into a specialized wizard, dungeons to explore and puzzles to solve. It’ll be very interesting to see what’s there to find for us once the game releases towards the end of 2022.
