PUBG has been making headlines in recent weeks with the announcement of eSports tournaments, one after the other. In the latest events around the game, 15 individuals have been arrested and fined $5.1 million for having created and distributed a cheat for the game.

Apart from inflicting life-long bans on players who defy the rules of the game, altering its in-game physics to enable them to garner a significant advantage over fellow competitors, PUBG Corp. has taken a legal recourse to pursuing the wrongdoers. PUBG has addressed the issue in an official statement:

‘15 major suspects including “OMG”, “FL”, “火狐”, “须弥” and “炎黄” were arrested for developing hack programs, hosting marketplaces for hack programs, and brokering transactions. Currently the suspects have been fined approximately 30mil RNB ($5.1mil USD). Other suspects related to this case are still being investigated.

Some hack programs that are being distributed through the Internet includes a Huigezi Trojan horse*(Chinese backdoor) virus. It was proven that hack developers used this virus to control users’ PC, scan their data, and extract information illegally.’

While the measure seems rather drastic, compared to what other companies have been doing to hackers who have been participating in popular eSports titles, PUBG Corp. said that the arrested individuals had also been planning to steal gamers’ personal data. With this in mind, legal action is justified.

The arrests conclude a collaboration between PUBG Corp. and local authorities to track down hackers and hold them accountable for infringing copyright and endangering the privacy of fellow gamers.
