Lithuanian basketball club Žalgiris, based in the city of Kaunas has announced that the organisation is expanding into eSports, adding teams in a slew of mainstream titles, including Hearthstone, League of Legends (LoL), and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO).

Two regional eSports champions, including Gameplay DNA and Baltic Elite, will assist Žalgiris in the club’s transition into electronic sports. The club has already its eyes peeled for events it would go after, including the InfoShow and GameOn 2018.

Further down the road, Zalgiris Esports will enter the CS:GO ESEA League and participate in the region’s Baltic Esports League (BESL). The team also intends to field teams in DreamHack.

Žalgiris will participate in this natural development of mainstream sports with professional organisations already introducing players to eSports.

Formula 1 and US National Basketball Association teams have already been signing up players, along with Tennis eSports tournaments and FIFA players representing mainstream football clubs.

Zalgiris club director Paulius Motiejunas spoke at a press conference, stating that eSports would allow the organisation to reach to younger audiences.
