Tencent has decided to turn its King Pro League, for the company’s MOBA eSports title Honor of Kings, into a location-based competition. Announced last week, the KPL has already started its Spring Split, with 12 participating teams.

The league is divided into an East and West region in their respective hosting cities of Shanghai and Chengdu. In addition to consolidating its model of running eSports events, Tencent has been successful in adding noteworthy sponsors, including McDonald’s, Shangai Pudong Development Bank and Chinese smartphone maker Vivo to back the KPL.

Versus Programming Network (VSPN) will broadcast the KPL matches. VSPN is an established name in eSports streams, with the company providing coverage of other major titles, including Crossfire, FIFA, and Clash Royale. Similarly, VSPN is also in charge of China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL).

If the league format proves sustainable, Tencent may consider adding more venues, the Esports Observer reported in an article, citing a source close to the matter.
