ICONS TRANSITIONS TO NEXT STAGE OF CLOSED BETA

On Wednesday 18 April, Icons: Combat Arena has progressed to the next stage of its closed beta, allowing the public to find out more about the new ‘platform fighter,’ which may pose as a direct challenger of Nintendo’s Smash Bros. title.

In an official tweet, the developing studio Wavedash Games announced it is lifting the NDA that would allow more information to be shared openly with the public. While the game is a little-known title, its eSports aspirations in the so-called ‘platform fighter’ genre are clear.

In addition, the Bros franchise currently lacks backing from Nintendo to take off as a full-blown eSports initiative and the game relies on a strong grassroots movement instead. At the same time, Wavedash Games have received additional $6 million to fund their game.

More importantly, Wavedash Games have made an official announcement on Twitter that they will pursue an eSports future for their product, and plan to follow a similar model to this of Riot and Blizzard with their popular competitive titles, such as League of Legends and Hearthstone respectively.

Wavedash also cited PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and its successful model of turning an aspiring competitive title into a riveting spectacle.
