A controversial subject over the years, the report system has always been under a lot of criticism, but is its current state good enough? The most likely answer to that question would be ‘no’. Depending on your luck with teammates, in general, you’ll probably need more reports than you need. Right now, the biggest issue with the system is that you can’t report anyone more than once. There’s a built-in ‘internal cooldown’ and you have to wait an entire month before submitting another summary for a certain individual. That causes a lot of problems.
If you ever had the pleasure of playing with the same person twice or thrice in a row you’ll know what I mean. While that happens rarely most of the time, the higher you go in the bracket and the more time it takes to find people for a game, the bigger the chances. That’s especially true for the Divine and up ranks where the player pool is much smaller and it feels more like a LAN party than playing online. If you have the same teammate for multiple games and they decide to throw the game on purpose, there’s literally nothing you can do. Only hope that maybe the other three people on the squad have a vote to cast. To add even more insult to injury, if anyone abandons, you won’t be able to send a record of it unless you wait until the very end of the game itself, so in a way you’re the one getting punished for trying to do the right thing.
Another thing which further complicates all of the above is that commends, in a way, negate reports. Basically, if you commend someone, you won’t be able to report them for the same duration – a month. To be fair that would happen less often, but it’s still a hindrance in the way of reformation, implying that people actually get reformed after a visit to Low priority. The recent implementation of 6-month bans being sent out to accounts with exclusively negative feedback is probably the best change to the game in recent years. It’s also sad that the only thing that would keep certain types acting decently is the fear of being removed from the game as a whole. Before that, both the number and meaning of reports was reworked multiple times. Right now, all you get is three, three reports per week, while you get a refund when someone you suggested gets sent to Dota jail, it still feels that they aren’t even close to enough. At this point, I really don’t know what the next step would be, giving more reports appears to cause people wasting them on actions that aren’t report-worthy while having such a limited amount, leads to not having enough when you actually need them. We appear to be stuck in a vicious cycle.
