The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) is the latest mainstream sport body to support electronic sports. The racing series results from a collaboration between CAMS and Motum Simulation.

CAMS commercial director John Murphy spoke with Motorsports.com, explaining that the organisation is interested in exploring the potential of eSports as a stand-alone discipline.

Motorsports governing body FIA had established Grand Turismo as a competitive title a year before, Murphy continued. Both CAM and Motum are interested in advancing the event on a global scale.

Motum has previously experimented with eSports and virtual reality. In 2017, Motum held the Virtual Racing Showdown pow-wow at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

Motum will become the official hardware partner of CAMS as part of the partnership. CAMS acknowledges eSports as a virtual sport and concedes that it may ‘contribute towards the improvement of driver skills in motorsport.’

In recent months, mainstream sports organisations have been throwing their weight in support of virtual competitions. The US National Basketball Association (NBA) has set up its own e-league and BNP Paribas most recently collaborated with the French Tennis Federation to release an eSports competition as well. Football teams have already been fielding their own eSports players to represent the brand.
